How to Become A Strategic Leader

When you watch enough good movies about heroes pushed into a corner but coming out victorious because they had a good plan, you start to wonder how you, too, can become a strategic leader. I know I’ve pictured myself as Captain America a few times. I wondered if I could get the Avengers out of trouble with only a good plan. Am I worthy?

As a good leader, you must have asked yourself the same. Whether new in management or a veteran, being a leader means your team or employees look for answers and strategies. They need you to be the guy who always has a plan.

As an employee, I had the mindset that my efforts were all part of my manager’s grand plan. I did not expect the manager to come asking me for a strategy on growth, brand visibility, etc. Nope, I expected him to give me my work and nothing else.

Being on the other side of the table, it was up to me to see the bigger picture. That was a frightening realization. But what would be even scarier is realizing that you have no strategic skills. It can shake your confidence and affect how you lead the team.

Worse, it will reflect poorly on your decision-making. You may dissolve the Avengers before you’ve even had the chance to lead them. So, how does one become a strategic leader? How do you go from clueless to captain?

Like all things, it takes practice and learning. A good place to start is right here.

What Makes a Strategic Leader?

Strategic leadership comes down to skills. It’s about using certain skills to help your team and the organization achieve their long-term goals.

It is also about understanding the picture, coming up with or considering options before making a decision. The goal is for your people and the organization to do well.

So, what skills make a strategic leader?

Visionary Thinking

Visionary thinking is like having a superpower that lets you see beyond the horizon. A strategic leader can visualize the future and chart a course to get there. In short, don’t just create technology; picture a future where your innovations change the world.

As a leader, you must see the bigger picture for your team or organization and inspire others with that vision. It’s about setting long-term goals and motivating your team to work towards them.

Effective Communication

Good communication is important. It’s not just about talking but ensuring your message is understood. As a leader, your ability to share ideas, listen to feedback, and foster an open dialogue can make or break your team’s success.

Decisiveness

In the face of uncertainty, a strategic leader must make decisions confidently and swiftly. In your role, being able to weigh options and choose a course of action efficiently is key to maintaining momentum and credibility.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intellect is understanding and managing your emotions while empathizing with others. As a leader, being attuned to your team’s emotional needs can create a supportive environment, boosting morale and productivity.

Creative Problem-Solving

Sometimes, problems require out-of-the-box thinking. Strategic leaders need creativity to find innovative solutions to challenges. Whether it’s streamlining a process or developing a new product, thinking creatively can give your team a competitive edge.

Adaptability

Adaptability is the ability to pivot strategies in response to changing circumstances. In leadership, adaptability means being open to change and ready to revise plans when new information or challenges arise, ensuring your team remains resilient and forward-moving.

7 Areas of Focus to Become a Strategic Leader

So, how does one gain these skills and become a strategic leader? Like I said, being a strategic leader does not happen overnight.

Even those with natural talents have grown them over time so they can be effective each time. There is so much about strategic leadership to cover. However, it is best to start with the following areas of focus.

Work On Your Vision

To become a strategic leader, you need a clear and exciting vision. Look at successful figures like Steve Jobs, who had a vision for Apple that extended far beyond just making computers. He envisioned a world where technology became everyday life, and he communicated that vision passionately.

To develop your vision, think about where you want your team or company to be in the future. Work out the kinks, give each step a reasonable deadline, and a plan to execute it. Share this vision consistently and inspire your team to work towards it.

A well-presented vision not only sets a direction but also motivates and unites your team in working towards common goals.

Improve Your Listening and Communication Skills

Effective communication is important for anyone aspiring to become a strategic leader. Consider how leaders like Barack Obama use clear communication to connect with audiences. It’s one of the things people will always remember about him for a reason!

Good leaders listen actively and communicate their ideas clearly, making sure everyone is on the same page. Practice active listening by truly engaging with your team members during discussions and valuing their input.

Update your team regularly on goals and progress to keep everyone on the same page. By sharpening your listening and communication skills, you’ll create a cooperative environment where ideas flow freely and your vision can be effectively realized.

Practice And Perfect Decisiveness

Decisiveness is a necessity of strategic leadership. Think about how military leaders make critical decisions under immense pressure. In such a situation, you cannot afford to be hesitant or confused. You need to be clear-headed and ready to make that decision.

To become a strategic leader, practice making decisions quickly and confidently. Start by setting clear criteria for decision-making and gather the necessary information without getting bogged down in analysis paralysis.

Also, it’s important to go through your past decisions to learn from mistakes and successes. By improving your decisiveness, you’ll build trust within your team. They will have faith in your ability to lead them through anything from a bad review to COVID.

Build Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is essential for those who want to become a strategic leader. Society expects male leaders to stay away from emotions and anything that can be seen as ‘weakness.’ But it is empathy and understanding—emotional intelligence— that unites and inspires.

Develop your emotional intelligence by becoming aware of your own emotions and how they impact your behavior. Practice empathy by considering your team members’ feelings and perspectives. Most importantly, engage in active listening and provide constructive feedback.

It is a gateway to enhancing your team’s morale and productivity. It will lead to better collaboration and success in achieving strategic goals.

Become Comfortable With Adaptability

To become a strategic leader, you must be comfortable with adaptability. A global pandemic shook many companies into submission. Even now, some are still struggling because they could not adapt. The ability to pivot and adopt new opportunities or overcome challenges is key to success.

Embrace change by seeking out new experiences and staying open to different approaches. Adaptability also means being ready to adjust your strategies when the circumstances change. The flexibility ensures you and your team can go through uncertainties and seize new opportunities, keeping your organization resilient and forward-moving in an ever-changing landscape.

Challenge Yourself To Solve Problems Creatively

Creative problem-solving is one of those things you cannot escape if you want to become a strategic leader. You must encourage your people to think outside the box and explore unconventional solutions. In addition, you must hold yourself to the same standards, if not higher.

So, hold brainstorming sessions where all ideas are welcome, no matter how outlandish they may seem. By encouraging a culture of creativity, you’ll find unique ways to overcome obstacles and achieve your strategic goals.

Creative problem-solving sets you apart and drives continuous improvement and competitive advantage.

Never Stop Learning

Continuous learning is a necessary part of the journey to becoming a strategic leader. Great leaders spend significant time reading and expanding their knowledge for a reason. In leadership, you can never know too much.

So, stay curious and dedicated to your personal and professional development. Attend industry conferences, read books, and find mentorship from experienced leaders.

Always updating your skills and knowledge, you’ll stay ahead of industry trends and be better equipped to lead your team strategically.

A commitment to lifelong learning ensures you can adapt to new challenges and opportunities. And with the way the world is moving, it will be a key asset.

Stay Committed to the Journey

Practice and persistence are necessary to truly become a strategic leader. Captain America’s journey from a scrawny kid to a superhero didn’t happen overnight. He trained endlessly and stayed committed to his mission.

Similarly, developing strategic leadership skills requires dedication and continuous effort. Embrace the challenges and learn from them. Keep refining your vision, communication, decisiveness, emotional intelligence, adaptability, creative problem-solving, and commitment to learning.

Sticking to this journey means you’ll lead your team effectively and also inspire them to achieve greatness.
